The Bible (and most especially the gospels) were not created as a historical record. The gospel do contain some reliable historical information, but it was not the primary aim of the evangelists to record history. Their purpose was theological; the gospels are missionary, persuasive documents. They are designed to elicit faith in Christ. The author of John states this quite clearly at the end of his gospel: “Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may come to believe [or may continue to believe] that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God” (John 20:30-31).
