It is true that there was some conflict between pagans and Christians, but "warring" is hardly the correct term. Christians were pacifists; they didn't fight in wars. It was the pagans who persecuted Christians, as their own documents attest. But Brown does not present it this way, because to do so would reveal the illogic of the story he is presenting.
Brown claims that Christianity began as a kind of pagan religion based on the teachings of the human prophet Jesus, who advocated worship of the divine feminine, a positive view of sexuality, and respect for the forces of nature. In this respect, Brown contends, “original” Christianity was not unlike other ancient nature-based, goddess-worshipping pagan religions. But if “original” Christianity was so similar to other ancient pagan religions, why were Christians singled out for persecution by the Romans? Christianity was really the only religion was targeted for persecution by the Romans; there must have been something very different about it.
